First Ever Patent Issued for Ligature Resistant Toilet Seat

August 21, 2018 – City of Industry, CA - The United States Patent and Trademark Office issued patent #10052000 to Acorn Engineering Company for a ligature-resistant toilet seat that is part of Whitehall Manufacturing’s BestCare™ line of ligature-resistant products for the behavioral healthcare market. It is the first and only such patent released to date.

“In the past, manufacturers’ answer to the problem of standard toilet seats, which are not by nature ligature resistant, was to eliminate the seat altogether,” said Kristin Kahle, vice president of Whitehall Manufacturing.

“We strongly believe in maintaining the balance between patient safety, security, and creating a non-institutional environment. Eliminating toilet seats may be acceptable in a correctional institution, but it should not be standard practice in behavioral healthcare settings.”

The Whitehall Ligature-Resistant Toilet Seat Cover (WH-LRSC Series) is recommended for patient rooms and facilities where ligature points are a concern. This seat does not hinge up and down and is designed to be permanently affixed using mechanical fasteners and/or silicone adhesive. The standard color for the seat cover is gray, which adds contrast so that a patient, especially those in long-term care, can see it easily. The seat is also available in black or white.

This seat is designed to fit Whitehall Ligature-Resistant Toilets exclusively, including all varieties of WH2142 and WH2145. It is constructed of ABS plastic with anti-microbial additives to protect against fungal growth and reduces or mitigates the development of odors due to the growth of bacteria.
